For golfers visiting from Australia, the UK, Europe, or North America, where pushing your own trundler or sharing a self-drive cart is normal, arriving at a Vietnamese golf club for the first time is a pleasant surprise. At every championship course in Vietnam, each player is assigned a dedicated one-on-one personal caddie for the entire round.
Understanding how your caddie works with you, how much to tip in Vietnamese Dong (VND), and what Vietnamese starters expect on the tee box will help your group settle in from the very first hole.
Vietnam caddie tipping & club etiquette quick guide
| Topic | 2026/2027 Vietnam standard | Practical tip for visiting golfers |
|---|---|---|
| Caddie ratio | 1 personal caddie per golfer (compulsory) | Your caddie fee is included in your prepaid package voucher |
| Standard 18-hole cash tip | 400,000 to 500,000 VND (approx. US$16 to US$20 / AU$25 to AU$30) | Hand crisp VND cash directly to your caddie at the bag drop after Hole 18 |
| Exceptional service / 36 holes | 600,000 VND (18 holes) or 800,000 to 1,000,000 VND (36 holes) | Keep 500,000 VND and 200,000 VND notes in a zip pocket of your golf bag |
| Buggy / golf cart driving | Caddies drive the buggy at most clubs (1 cart per 2 players, or solo cart upgrade) | Let your caddie drive while you walk down the fairway or ride alongside |
| On-course dress code | Collared polo shirt (or golf mock neck), tailored shorts/trousers, soft spikes | Denim, gym shorts, football jerseys, and metal spikes are not permitted |
1. What your personal caddie does during the round
When your golf van pulls up to the clubhouse bag drop 45 minutes before your tee time, uniformed attendants and caddies tag your clubs and load them onto your assigned buggy before you even finish checking in at reception.
Out on the course, your caddie does far more than drive the cart. They carry a laser rangefinder (or know every sprinkler-head yardage by heart), call out adjusted carry numbers for uphill slopes and coastal wind, rake every bunker, repair pitch marks, clean your grooves and golf ball after every hole, and hold a UV golf umbrella over you while you wait on the tee box.
Where Vietnamese caddies save visiting players the most strokes is on the putting surface. Most coastal and southern courses in Vietnam use Seashore Paspalum or TifEagle Bermuda grass, which develops a strong grain pulling toward the ocean or setting sun. Even if your caddie speaks concise golf English, listen closely when they point out "two cups left, uphill slow" or "down-grain, very fast".
2. How much and how to tip your caddie
Although your tour package includes the club's caddie fee, the club retains most of that fee to cover uniforms, training, and administration. The cash tip you hand your caddie after the 18th hole is their primary daily income.
In 2026/2027, the universal benchmark across Hanoi, Da Nang, Nha Trang, Ho Chi Minh City, and Phu Quoc is 400,000 to 500,000 VND (roughly US$16 to US$20) per 18 holes. If your caddie saved you half a dozen strokes reading tricky greens or worked through a passing afternoon shower, 600,000 VND (US$24) is warmly appreciated.
Always tip in local Vietnamese Dong (VND) rather than foreign currency. Rural bank branches near golf courses often refuse worn US$1 or US$5 bills and cannot exchange Australian or Singapore coins, so a single blue 500,000 VND polymer note is the cleanest way to tip.
3. Dress code, halfway houses, and pace of play
Vietnamese championship clubs maintain traditional country-club dress standards. Men and women should wear collared golf shirts and tailored golf shorts, skorts, or trousers. Every course has air-conditioned locker rooms with hot showers, fresh towels, and complimentary toiletries so you can change into fresh street clothes before heading to dinner or the airport.
Every three or four holes, you will pass a shaded halfway kiosk selling ice-cold bottled water, electrolyte drinks, fresh coconuts, local beer, and Vietnamese iced coffee (ca phe sua da). It is customary in Vietnam to offer to buy your caddie a bottle of water or a soft drink at the turn on warm days. For full trip budgeting details, see our Vietnam Golf Trip Cost Breakdown.
